Differences between California’s Medication Rules and USEF Rules – 1/15/13

just-the-facts_edited-1Got this notice from the California State Veterinarian’s office – it’s important information for anyone showing in California.  There are important differences between the CA drug rules, and the USEF rules, and exhibitors have to follow the most stringent rule.

Firocoxib (Equioxx®)
CA – Prohibited: Requires 24 hour withdrawal prior to competition
USEF – Permissible: Maximum permitted plasma concentration of 0.240 micrograms per milliliter

Diclofenic Acid (Surpass®)
CA – Prohibited: Requires 24 hour withdrawal prior to competition.
USEP – Permissible: Maximum permitted plasma concentration of 0 .005 micrograms per milliliter

Methocarbamol (Robaxin®)

CA – Prohibited: Requires 24 hour withdrawal prior to competition.
USEF – Permissible: Maximum permitted plasma concentration of 4.0 micrograms per milliliter

Dexamethasone

CA – Prohibited: Requires 24 hour withdrawal prior to competition.
USEF – Permissible: Maximum permitted plasma concentration of 0.003 micrograms per milliliter

Use of Multiple NSAIDs
CA – Multiple NSAIDS acceptable if the combined doses of not more than two NSAIDS do not exceed the maximum plasma detectable levels. Exception: phenylbutazone (Bute®) and flunixin (Banamine®) are not permitted in the same sample.
USEF – ONLY ONE NSAID permitted
Drug Declaration/Medication Report
CA:  Must complete California Drug Declaration for ANY medications administered in the 3 days prior to competition.
USEF:  Must complete Medication Report for Forbidden Substances.
